Hyundai Elantra Recommended Oil Type

Most vehicles use conventional motor oil, an unrefined crude oil that needs to be changed approximately every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. But what kind of oil does a Hyundai Elantra take? While conventional oil won’t harm your Elantra engine, we suggest using synthetic oil for the best possible performance. While it costs more upfront, synthetic oil only needs to be changed every 7,000 to 10,000 miles. Whether you opt for conventional or synthetic Hyundai Elantra oil, make sure it’s one of these two grades:

  • 5W-20
  • 5W-30

5W-20 to 5W-30 oils are the right density to properly lubricate and protect the parts of your Hyundai Elantra engine, no matter the temperature in Lexington. Motor oil marked 0W-15 or 10W-40 grade will be too thin or too thick to do the job.

How to Change Your Hyundai Elantra Oil

If you’re comfortable with DIY auto maintenance, purchase the 5W-20 or 5W-30 grade of conventional or synthetic oil, and a replacement oil filter. Keep in mind that you can order oil change supplies through our parts center, or ask our team for help finding your Hyundai Elantra recommended oil! Then follow these steps to perform a Hyundai Elantra oil change at home in Dyersburg:

  1. Use a car jack or steel ramps to raise your Elantra off the ground, and secure with jack stands or wheel blocks.
  2. Find the oil drain plug on the bottom of the oil pan, under the engine.
  3. Place an oil basin underneath the plug. Unscrew the plug and allow the oil to drain out completely, up to 15 minutes, and replace the plug.
  4. Use an oil filter wrench to remove the old oil filter. Be sure to move the oil basin under the filter first to catch any excess oil.
  5. To ensure a watertight seal, take your new filter and rub a bit of the new motor oil around the rubber seal.
  6. Put the new filter in place, and tighten it by hand. Then tighten all the way with your oil filter wrench.
  7. Open the hood and find the oil reservoir. Pour in the specified amount of Hyundai Elantra recommended oil, about 4.2 quarts.
  8. Using the dipstick, check the oil level in the reservoir. If the level is low, add oil by the ounce.
  9. Re-check the level after each addition until you’re at the proper level.
